Vienna has a population of nearly 1.9 million inhabitants and its metropolitan area has more than two and a half million inhabitants.
Currency
Like most European countries, the official currency of Austria is the Euro.
Local time zone
The time zone in Vienna is GMT+2 in summer. In other words, Vienna is 2 hours ahead of the United Kingdom, 7 hours ahead of New York, and 9 hours behind Sydney.
Health insurance
Healthcare in Austria is excellent, and service is available throughout the country.
If you’re an EU citizen, you can receive free healthcare in Austria provided you have an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card). UK Citizens can apply for a European Health Insurance Card here. Otherwise, make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.
Electricity and plugs
In Austria, the electricity supply is 220 volts (like in other European countries). The power sockets are type F with two prongs. You will need an electricity plug adaptor if you are traveling with UK or US electrical appliances.

US Citizens
American citizens traveling to Austria for less than 90 days do not need a visa. However, they will need a valid passport for at least six months beyond their stay. Immigration officers may also ask citizens to show enough funds for their stay and a return airline ticket.
Australian Citizens
Australian citizens visiting Austria or any other European country in the Schengen Convention (all EU states minus Britain and Ireland, plus Switzerland) for less than 90 days do not require a visa. Passports need to have at least six-month validity from the planned date of return.
EU, EEA and Swiss Citizens
As citizens of the European Union and European Economic Area, you will not need a visa to enter the country. A valid passport or national identity card is required.

Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Romania and Sweden.
EEA countries
Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
Citizens of the following countries do not need a visa to enter Austria
The following countries do not require a visa for visits lasting less than 90 days, but require a valid passport to enter Austria.
Andorra, Antigua and Bermuda, Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Bolivia, Bosnia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Korea, Macao, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Monaco, Montenegro, Nicaragua, New Zealand, Panama, Paraguay, Saint Kitts and Nevis, San Marino, Serbia, Seychelles, Singapore, Taiwan, Uruguay and Venezuela.
Other countries
For citizens of countries not previously mentioned, we recommend visiting your country’s Austrian Embassy or checking the Austrian Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs website for more information.
The official language of Vienna is German. English is understood in many places, so don’t worry too much about not speaking German, but you might find that some restaurants only have German language menus and German speaking waiters.
DRINKING WATER
You can drink tap water without hesitation.
Over 900 drinking fountains in the city supply residents and tourists with fresh water.
ELECTRICITY
The voltage is 220 volts.
Travelers from outside Europe should use an adapter, Type C or F.
OPENING HOURS
In general, the shops in the city centre are open from Monday to Friday from 9am to 7pm and on Saturday from 9am to 6pm.
Thursday and Friday evening many supermarkets and shops in the shopping streets open longer.
Banks are open Monday to Friday from 8am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 3pm. Oh Thursdays until 5.30pm.
The opening hours of museums vary a lot and depend on the museum.
